Head of canoeing: James Robey
Professional coach: Kyle Friedenstein
Canoeing is a sport which encourages boys to be adventurous. Started some 30 years ago at Hilton College, it is a small but active club, and there are currently about 10 canoeists in Summer. Winter canoeing is reserved for the elite paddlers representing KZN or SA at various disciplines. We train on Deeside dam on Tuesdays and Thursdays, under the guidance of our coach Kyle Friedenstein. Kyle has a wealth of international and local experience to share with the boys and is an integral part of the club.
On Saturdays we compete in an Inter-Schools League which covers most of the Canoeing disciplines like Sprints, Flat Water Marathon, Slalom, Canoe Polo, Enduro, Surf-Ski and obviously River Paddling. On a Sunday’s boys often compete in the KZN Canoeing Union races. Competing in the KZN Canoeing Union races allows boys to qualify for the ‘big races’ such as Fish, Duzi, 50 Miler, Umkomazi and the Drak Challenge. The club strives to get as many boys as possible to these events.
