Basketball, according to FIBA rules, has been played at Hilton College for more than a decade. The current Director of Basketball is Mr David Look drl@hiltoncollege.com

Number of teams

Players are coached in 4 age groups – U14, U15, U16 and U19 in Term 1; and 3 age-groups – U14, U15 and U19 in Term 4. The club currently caters for approx. 215 sports opts. The program is a closed one where players gain access through an application and trials process. Trials include both fitness and skill-based assessments monitored by the coaching staff. The limitation on our program is largely due to space and the lack of facilities. However, the limitation also ensures quality of the coaching sessions.

Fixtures and Important Dates

Fixtures may occasionally take place on a weekday afternoon (on a boy’s normal sports opt day), but are most often scheduled on Saturday during term 1 and 4. Pre-season fixtures are scheduled in Term 3 but this only applies to the senior pre-season squad. Hilton College normally takes part in annual tours for our U16A and 1st team only. This includes:

U16 – the Michaelhouse Tournament (26 Jan 2020) and the St. Stithians Tournament (usually February). Unfortunately, Hilton College could not enter the St. Stithians tournament in 2020.

U19 – the St. Johns Tournament (26 Feb – 1 Mar 2020) and the Kearsney Independent Schools Stayers Tournament (18 – 22 Sept 2020).

The Basketball club also hosts an annual training camp for members of the 1st and U16A teams in the week prior to the opening of Term 1. The 2021 camp will likely be held at Hilton College between the 14th and 17th of January.

The Basketball Club’s 1st Team hopes to tour the United States in 2020/21. Tours for the U14 and U15 age-groups are being investigated but are yet to be confirmed. All tours are at the discretion of the Director of Sport and Director of Basketball.

Facilities

There are currently only two (2) indoor courts and one (1) outdoor court. The club currently has one digital scoreboard. We have recently added a shot clock to COURT 1. The Club hopes to add two additional outdoor courts in 2020/21 whilst investigations into expanding/re-modelling the Indoor Centre are being explored. Please contact the Director of Basketball if you, or your company, are in a position to assist in these exciting projects.

Coaching & Refereeing

The coaching of players is provided by members of staff. However, the club is largely reliant on the support offered by external coaches, most of whom play in the local leagues. Coaching sessions last approx. two hours (15:15-17:00); elite training is provided in the mornings (Monday, Wednesday 05:30-06:15) and evening training sessions (Tuesday, Thursday 18:10-19:45) for players within the 1st squad. Supervised prep sessions are provided to the 1st squad on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (15:15-17:00).

However, owing to a limitation of facilities, practice times may vary to ensure each team has access to a full court. Juniors (U14 & U15) normally train on a Monday and Wednesday (15:15-17:30); Seniors (U16, U19) normally train on a Tuesday and Thursday (15:15-17:30).

The training of referees is facilitated by Mr Suwi Siwila (a current international referee), which includes theory and practical training, which when completed is a recognised FIBA qualification. The provision of referee training is available to both staff and boys, who fulfil match official duties on match days.

Dress & Ball Policy

The Basketball Club was proud to unveil its new Club Kit in November 2019. All kit worn by players is available at the Stock Exchange. The kit has been redesigned for the 2019-2023 seasons. The 2nd and 1st teams have unique kit designs based on the school’s corporate identity and are black and white. The new kit is reversible and will cost an estimated R680 for 2020.

All players are required to purchase a reversible bib (R350) which they have to wear at practice. All kits/bibs are numbered according to FIBA law requirements. The Club will be trialling the use of (padded) compression kit in Term 4, 2019.

Please note that every opt is required to have their own practice ball. These may be ordered through the Stock Exchange or bought privately. The following balls (Size 7) are available at the Stock Exchange – Spalding TF150 @ R195; the Spalding TF250 @ R395; and the Molten GG7X @ R799. All prices listed are inclusive of VAT and are subject to change.

Season
