SPORT

Sport at Hilton College is one part of the balance that the school strives to achieve in its approach to extracurricular activities. There is a long and proud tradition of excellence in sport, but importantly we aim to cater for the competence level of each individual boy, and to provide him with the competition and coaching that is going to ensure that he grows in confidence and enjoys the sport at the level at which he is competing.

Coaching
Coaching is provided from within the Hilton College staff and we are indeed fortunate to have a group of dedicated and competent coaches within our ranks. Where necessary, we employ outside coaches to add their expertise to the coaching body.

We are very aware that sport today may be a career option for some very dedicated and talented boys, and we strive to ensure that these boys are equipped with the necessary physical and mental skills to enable them to cope with the harsh world of professional sport. Hilton Old Boys have enjoyed considerable success at provincial and national level over recent years. At senior national level these include Gary Teichmann, Hentie Maartens, Wayne Fyvie and Bob Skinstad (rugby); Dave Viney (hockey); Derek Crookes (cricket); Doug Lund and Clive Hill (polo) and Scott Rutherfoord (canoeing).

Choice of Sports
A boy may choose which summer and winter sport he wishes to play, with the proviso that, in his first year, one of his choices should be a team sport. This is his major sport for the term and he will be required to attend two practices a week and there will also normally be a match per week, usually on Saturdays. He may choose to play other sports in his leisure time, but these are on a casual basis. His commitment is essentially to his major sport. Great care is taken to ensure that a boy is provided with the appropriate coaching and that matches are arranged for all teams no matter how junior they may be. Boys are encouraged to be competitive, but values such as team work, manners, good sportsmanship are high on the agenda.

Facilities
Hilton College is able to provide boys with wonderful facilities in the most beautiful surroundings. Apart from rugby and cricket fields, and tennis and squash courts, we also have an indoor Sports Centre, the Crews Fitness Centre, a heated swimming pool as well as the Beckingham artificial Hockey Field and an extensive practice area for golf which includes greens, a bunker and a driving range.

The facilities and the infrastructure are there for the boys to enjoy. We hope that a Hilton boy will leave school with a rich tapestry of memories of happy hours spent on the sports fields, and that in the process, he will have learnt the true meaning of words such as friendship, commitment and enjoyment.
