SPIRITUAL LIFE

In terms of its foundation, Hilton College is a non-denominational Christian school committed to the belief that a life based on a personal relationship with God is an important component of a meaningful existence. On this understanding, boys of any faith are welcomed, respected and provided for. The beautiful Chapel stands, appropriately, at the centre of the school, stating unequivocally the importance of our Christian foundation, and the value structures which prevail here.

The Ecumenical Approach
The ecumenical approach implied by the school’s nondenominational status is evident in the spiritual activities which take place. Our pupils belong to a variety of Christian denominations and although the School Chaplain, Fr Kevin Robertson, is an Anglican, Sunday services are taken by visiting preachers from various churches. A number of the boys are Roman Catholic, and provision is made for Mass to be celebrated most Sunday mornings.

Chapel Attendance
Boys attend a Chapel Service once on Sunday (these vary from a single evening service for the whole community, to morning and late afternoon services that offer variety and choice), and once during the week. Each House also has a House prayer meeting once a week.

Chaplain’s Lessons
Boys from Grades 8 - 11 attend weekly classes with the Chaplain. These are not doctrinal classes, but seek to increase biblical understanding and relevant Life Skills, all within the framework of Christian philosophy.

Confirmation
Each year a number of boys are prepared for Confirmation, and there is a combined service at which Anglicans, Methodists and Presbyterians are admitted to their particular denominations. Provision is made for Roman Catholic pupils to attend Catechism and a local Confirmation Service.

Fellowship
There is a vibrant Christian Fellowship group in the school, run principally by the boys, but under the guidance of the Chaplain. Similarly, there is a network of House based Bible Study groups. Hilton has strong links with Scripture Union in the Independent Schools who periodically spend time in the School during a week of heightened awareness of Christian faith and commitment. Opportunities exist for fellowship with Christians from other local schools and there is positive communication between Christian leaders at schools in the Midlands.

Boys of other Faiths
A small percentage of the boys at Hilton are committed to faiths other than Christian and there is a policy which makes allowance for them. They are required to attend weekday services and the Chaplain’s lessons, but are excused Sunday worship provided they maintain active involvement in services of their own faiths. It is the intention of Hilton College that we are an example of a living Christian community, and that sound spiritual foundations are laid for our pupils on which future development of faith can be built.
