MUSIC
Our choir is practicing hard in anticipation of their tour to Turkey and
Austria to participate in the World Choir Olympics. Rehearsals for this
year’s production of ‘Grease’ are well on track and this promises to be
a wonderful event. There has been an interesting upswing in interest in
our Music Production courses. These focus on computerized music, both
recording and composing, and have attracted a whole new group of boys to
the Music Department, boys who cannot play a note on a piano but who
have a love of and aptitude for music.

ACADEMIC STUDIES
This year’s Matric group will be the first to write the new Further
Education and Training curriculum as their Matriculation Examination. A
significant number of our teaching staff are involved as examiners,
moderators or markers and so have had an input into the curriculum and
assessment standards.
Lynne
McMillan, our Deputy Head and Director of Studies, comments:
"While access to overseas universities is important and we want the
education of our pupils to be transportable, so that they can go with
confidence wherever life takes them, we are in the main educating our
students for entry into South African Universities, which is where the
vast majority of them will end up. South African Universities will use
the National Senior Certificate results plus the results of the common
entrance/access tests (benchmarking tests) to assess each candidate’s
suitability for tertiary study."
"This procedure is akin to that
practiced in the UK and the USA for a number of years, and by some South
African Universities for different faculties. In 2007 our Grade 12
pupils participated in the pilot and field study projects for the
National Benchmarking Tests. Our pupils performed successfully in these
tests and according to our expectations. It is our policy to participate
in and contribute to all initiatives to measure, against trusted
benchmarks, the education we provide our pupils and in so doing to
ensure that we safeguard the quality of the their education. We continue
to have academic excellence as our hallmark and firmly believe that our
Grade 12 pupils will be well equipped to face their futures in the
rapidly changing world in which they will have to make their way."

On the sportsfield we have had a good number of successes to
celebrate. Without doubt, the highlight of the cricket season was a
sound win against Maritzburg College who consistently field a strong
team. A victory against Northwood and draws against DHS and Michaelhouse
all contributed to a good term. We field twenty cricket teams and all
had good seasons, with the ‘A’ teams winning more than their fair share
of fixtures.
Our golfers once again won the Inter-High School event, retaining
Hilton’s place as the top golfing school in the province. We also won
the Douglas Cup against Michaelhouse in a match played in very good
spirit at Boschoek this last weekend. Without going into too much
detail, the breadth and depth of our sporting life has been
extraordinary. The canoeists did well at the various races, Basketball
and Waterpolo had good seasons, as did our swimmers, not to mention
tennis and squash. Some of our top achievers are:
SWIMMING
Rubin Cloete and Clayton Prowse have been chosen for
the KZN Schools Swimming Team to represent KwaZulu-Natal at the S.A
Inter-Provincial Championships from 01 - 02 March 2008 in East London.

TENNIS
Graeme Heerden, Kevin Essery and Michael Tack have been
selected for the KZN Midlands Boys’ U/19 Tennis squad and who will
participate in the Inter-Regional tournament in March. Greg Morris has
been selected for the U15 Midlands team.
