Another early morning run greeted me
as I woke up this morning. The boys from C-Dorm did much better
today than they did on Tuesday, so we were happy about that.

Thursday morning chapel
Every Thursday morning in the first
term there is a full school chapel at 7.25am. As a Head of House one
of my responsibilities is to stand at the entrance of the chapel and
ensure that boys have their shirts tucked in and that they are
behaving well etc. Rev Kev spoke to us this morning about the first
two verses of our school hymn, “Lift up Your Hearts”, and how we
need to rely on God’s strength to lift us up out of the “mire of
sin”. From there the whole school made their way to class. Many of
the teachers were away today on an IEB Assessors Course, so a few
classes were disrupted slightly. Teachers leave work for their class
to do when they go away to conferences etc.
Since it was a senior sport day, I made my way to cricket practice,
after talking to Mr Guthrie about last night’s meeting during
central hour. The weather was a bit drizzly, but luckily we managed
to fit in a whole afternoon session. I enjoy cricket practices very
much, and the camaraderie and spirit between the team members is
very good. Unfortunately I did not get a bat this afternoon, but not
everyone can always have a chance and we got through most of the
batsmen in the team!

More “Grease” song rehearsal!
This evening there was another
“Grease” rehearsal, but this time we did not practice the acting
side of things, but rather the music. We practiced the well known
songs like ‘Summer Nights’ and ‘We Go Together’, and there are some
very good singers in the cast! I recommend you see it! (My
advertising is now done!)
At 9.30 we had a McKenzie Matric meeting without any staff present.
I think it is important to have these meetings because it gives the
boys time to discuss issues that relate specifically to us. If there
are any problems with certain boys in the dorms we can discuss how
to sort the problem out for example. Very often at a boy’s boarding
school a lot of the problems are solved by boys themselves. This is
because boys can easier relate to each other than they can with
staff. Tonight we discussed issues relating to the school mission
statement for the year, general school rules and expectations and
also what we are going to sing for the Inter House music
competition. We will be sing “We all stand together” as a House
which will be fun. Interestingly the competition will be adjudicated
by four St Anne’s girls, so that adds an interesting dimension!
As the week draws on a boy at school (especially with lots of work),
grows increasingly tired, and after yet another night of hard graft
I retired to bed very tired and very grateful that I now got the
chance to rest!
