A nice cool morning greeted me at 8.30
this morning. On Sundays boys can sleep in a bit and go to breakfast
at 8.30. Boys enjoy this privilege and sometimes sleep a bit later
than that. Today was our “house in” which means that our junior boys
don’t have to go onto the estate.
Our Form I’s however had to go onto the estate today because every
year the Estate representative from each house, along with the dorm
Heads and Head of house take their new boys onto the estate to show
them some of the features and landmarks. By this time it was very
hot and we didn’t want to over-work them because it can turn one
against the estate if you have bad first impressions of it. I do
think, however that many of them really appreciate it and will spend
many happy hours on it during their time at Hilton. We took them to
three of our four Gwen’s waterfalls and Pinnacles Rock.

Me standing on Pinnacles rock – What a view!

Greg Pappas, one of our new boys – the first to make it up!
Pinnacles is a rock
that randomly sticks out of the vegetation and it is quite a
tradition for boys to climb it. Some of our youngsters had the
bravery to haul themselves up to the top, but others weren’t so
certain and stayed on safer ground. The view from the rock is
totally breathtaking and I hope that they all mange to get up before
they leave this place.

The new boys thoroughly enjoying the waterfall – Gwen’s One.

They also enjoyed walking through the forests. We are the only
school in the world to have an estate like this one!
On our House-In’s the Matric boys
on the Entertainment portfolio organize a fun event for the house.
For today three of our Matrics had organized a small soccer
tournament and a braai by the pool.

Boys relaxing by
the pool and enjoying good food prepared by our Form 4s

We got the Form I’s back before
lunch so they could join in the braai and soccer. I think that it
was important for them to get involved so that they get to know
different boys in McKenzie. Great fun was had by all and the fact
that it was held by the pool was greatly appreciated due to the
heat! This all ended in the early afternoon and boys were allowed
back in the house shortly afterwards. Some boys watched the cricket
while others watched movies or lay on their beds and rested. Sundays
are very relaxed and laid back at Hilton, and is the one day when
boys can choose who they want to spend time with. On the weekdays
much is dictated by their classes and on Saturday by their sport
teams, but Sunday you can go off and do whatever you want with
whoever you want.

Our Christian Fellowship Committee meeting
Just before evening chapel I had a
CF committee meeting where we discussed ideas and speakers etc for
next Friday. There was a Chapel service at 7.00pm which I attended
and Rev Kev spoke to us about wisdom. Straight after chapel I had a
heads of houses meeting with the seven heads of houses and the head
boy.

The Heads of Houses meeting in Falconia – the Head Boy’s house
We spoke about various general
issues like how to publicize our year’s motto and various projects
that we want to achieve by year-end. After this I reported back to
Mr Guthrie about what happened in the meeting to fill him in on what
was going on, and I also went around the house collecting money for
house funds.

Myself and Mr Guthrie shortly after having a chat
Most of the boys watched the Sunday
night movie. It is a great past-time on Sunday nights to end off the
week by watching the movie. Ten minutes after the movie has ended,
after brushing their teeth (yes, we do brush our teeth at boarding
school), boys go off to bed.

It has been quite a tiring weekend with all the sport and physical
activities and I am happy to go to bed now!
On to Monday |
