Another morning, another day, another
week, and the sun was shining brilliantly this morning. Monday
mornings are slightly more leisurely than the other weekdays and
breakfast starts at 7.00am rather than the usual 6.30am. Class then
begins at 7.55am as per usual.
At 10.30am there is a break where all the boys go for tea. Form I –
III go to the dining hall for tea while the seniors return to their
houses. It is a time for boys to relax a bit before the second half
of the school day and if boys are still hungry after their snack
provided by the kitchen, they are welcome to make toasted sandwiches
in the house. Class resumes at 11.05am, so boys head off for their
next lessons at around eleven.

Today’s tea was chocolate brownies

Chats around the lunch table are always most interesting and
enjoyable
After the second round of classes,
after lunch, all the Matric boys have a meeting with their
Housemasters and Assistant Housemasters. It is a time to deal with
certain issues in leading the house and various expectations of us.
Today Mr Guthrie handed out an article about effective leadership
and we discussed this before moving onto some other issues. These
meetings are important as, among other things, they get us all onto
the same page and working together as a team.
This afternoon I had some work I needed to do and I finished that
off. I also played some table tennis with a couple of other guys. It
is nice to just relax and play games with other boys sometimes. This
afternoon there were also swimming heats for the seniors. In the
heats boys try to get the best times they possibly can so that they
qualify to swim in the Championship Gala. I did not swim today
because I will not be here for the Championship Gala, but will be
playing cricket at St Albans during the gala.
This evening I had a bit of a clash with events. During second prep
I had an English Olympiad training session and a Grease rehearsal.
Every now and then clashes do occur and one has to try and squirm
out of one activity. It is one of the greater lessons I have learnt
at Hilton and that is prioritizing. One cannot do everything in
life, and although I try to do as much as I possibly can, sometimes
I have to make sacrifices. Tonight I was lucky in that Mrs MacMillan
was happy to let me go at half-time so I could get to my play
practice. We were practicing for the song “Greased Lightning” and it
was a lot of fun.
When I returned to the house, I popped into the C-Dorm lights out to
check up on them and sat on main table with the tutor on duty, Mr
Roberts, for a while. There was a fire drill as well tonight, which
is important, because we need to know the procedure and drill if
there ever is a real fire one day. Boys may not particularly like
hauling themselves out of bed, but you never know when a real fire
may come.
Having done all my work, I spent the rest of my night watching the
end of a movie before making my way to bed at about 10.30.
