A beautiful blue-skied dawn greeted me
as I woke up this morning. Unfortunately the blue sky disappeared
fairly quickly and soon it was overcast and a bit chilly. I walked
to breakfast with a couple of the Form I boys and we chatted about
how they had found Hilton so far. Pleasingly they have all settled
in well and are enjoying high school life.

Boys leading into Congregational to practice the songs for Sunday
night’s service
Every Friday morning we have
Congregational Practice. This entails the whole school getting
together and practicing the hymns for Sunday’s chapel services. The
singing this morning was particularly good as we sung some
well-known hymns.

Andrew Bourdillon giving his message to the school after
Congregational
From there, Andrew Bourdillon, our
Head Boy for 2008, had called a meeting for all the boys in the
school. It was to introduce them to the Matric body’s mission
statement for the year. He explained it very well and I think it was
well received by the school. Also at this meeting all the first
teams for the week were introduced by their captains. The purpose of
this is to give the boys who are playing first team recognition and
for the new boys to get an idea of who is who. Because this meeting
went into first period we (unfortunately) missed most of Maths, but
the rest of my classes resumed as normal.
Today was an important day for our new boys as they wrote their “New
Boys Tests”. Every new boy as part of his integration into the
school writes a new boys test. It gets them to acquaint themselves
with various people and places around the school. This year they
will write three tests, and so the syllabus is sliced into thirds.
Today was their first one, and I stayed with them to invigilate and
then mark their tests afterwards. It seems as though the McKenzie
boys had prepared very hard for this round as we had five boys who
obtained 100%, and we did not have one failure! I hope they will go
from strength to strength in the remaining tests!

I was lucky enough to have an
individual cricket lesson with our school professional, Mr Roberts.
Such lessons take place in the Sports Hall where there is an indoor
net and a bowling machine. He helped me with my batting, and I left
feeling much more confidant with my technique. From there it was
straight to Captains Practice. At 4.00pm on Fridays the captain
takes a short practice with his team so that they can get their
minds right for the game the next day. Our “Captain’s” was slightly
depleted at four of our team members were playing golf for the
school (I’m pleased to report that they won!), but we got some
fielding done nonetheless.

Our CF band practicing the songs before Christian Fellowship
I always enjoy Friday nights
because every Friday there is Christian Fellowship (CF). CF is a
time for boys to gather and praise God and listen to a message given
to them by a teacher, a boy or an outside speaker. We are lucky
enough to have our own band that plays every week. Although it is
not about numbers, on a good night we can get over 100 people, but
tonight was quite a lot smaller as all the Form I’s and II’s had a
compulsory music concert, which from all accounts was very good,
however maybe not the boys’ cup of tea!
Tomorrow there is a full set of fixtures against various schools so
hopefully the weather will play its part so it can be a day enjoyed
by all.
