The annual Mathematics Olympiads and Mathematics Challenges that Hilton College pupils participate in continue to provide a healthy challenge and stimulus to those who like to test their problem solving skills against the rest of like-minded enthusiastic young people throughout the country.

COMPUTER STUDIES

COMPUTER OLYMPIAD:
JR Shorten was placed in the Top 40 in the South African Computer Olympiad.


CHESS

CC Fernandes represented KwaZulu-Natal at the South African Chess Championships that were held in Pretoria in December 2006. He will again represent the province at this year’s competition to be held in Bloemfontein.


PHYSICAL SCIENCE and BIOLOGY

2006 NATIONAL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD (Physical Science component)
JR Shorten won the Grade 11 section and S Krouse was placed 2nd.
ZM Bowen-Davies was placed 3rd in the Grade 10 section and DG Merrick was placed 4th.
Hilton College won the trophy for being the top school overall for 2006.

STANDARD BANK GRAHAMSTOWN NATIONAL YOUTH JAZZ FESTIVAL
GD Heerden and D Nambassi were selected to perform on the main stage at the Gala Concert on the last evening of this National event.

NEW CONCERT VENUE
With the inauguration of the refurbished Memorial Hall as Hilton College’s new concert venue on the 16th October 2007, TG Buckley,
SP Crookes, GD Heerden, AA Hinds, S Mabombo, SS Maroga, K Mkhize,
D Nambassi, AD Oosthuizen, B Perrett performed as soloists with professional players from KZNPO.

NATIONAL CONCERTS
AD Oosthuizen performed as an invited soloist at the Krugersdorp Reformed Church Music Celebration on the 17th August 2007


DEBATING

Based on his performance in the December 2006 national championships, DP Shorten was one of 12 selected for national trials held in January 2007 to select a South African touring team.

Junior Development Side - C Wood

KwaZulu-Natal representative for national debates (organized by the Department of Transport) - DP Shorten.

Senior Debating League
Two Senior Hilton College teams reached the Pietermaritzburg Quarter Finals. The team of - DS Cibane, RW Hartmann and JR Schmidt reached the Final.

Eight boys won Best Speaker Awards, the following winning two or more: A Duxbury, RW Hartmann (6), B Perrett, DP Shorten (3).

Junior Debating League
Two Junior Hilton College teams reached the Pietermaritzburg Quarter Finals.
The team of - FA Maritz, HN Masimula and CJ Pappas won the Pietermaritzburg League and came second in KwaZulu-Natal.

Eight boys won Best Speaker Awards, the following winning two or more: SP Coetzee (3), FA Maritz (2), HN Masimula (4), CJ Pappas (2).
Three Grade 8 speakers won Best Speaker Awards, the following winning two or more - HF Kassier (3), C Wood (4).

SOUTH AFRICAN INDIVIDUAL PUBLIC SPEAKING AND DEBATING CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Four Hilton College boys did exceptionally well in both the overall rankings and individual categories, the first three having qualified to participate in the 2008 international championships in Germany.

1st overall, plus 1st in After Dinner Speaking and Interpretive Reading - AJ Giliam
2nd overall, plus 3rd in Impromptu Speaking - DP Shorten
5th overall, plus 1st in Debating - A Duxbury
