Graeme Turnbull

Mr. Turnbull was taught to play the pipes by Lawrence Forsyth who was a piper in the Pietermaritzburg Caledonian Society Pipe Band. Mr. Forsyth was a very competent piper and demanded a very high standard from the pupils he taught. At 16 years of age Mr. Turnbull was finally considered to be sufficiently competent to be enrolled as a piper in the band. Fifty-four years later he finds himself still playing the pipes and having absolutely no regrets.

After being an active member of the band for 17 years he had a two year break from piping. He was then invited to join the Pipes & Drums of the Natal Mounted Rifles, where he served for the next 8½ years. In 1980 he rejoined PMB Callies and served with this band for an additional 12 years. In 1990 he became Pipe Major and served in this capacity until he retired from active band work in 1992.

Since his retirement he has continued to take a keen interest in all the activities associated with the world of piping. He continues to play the pipes on a fairly regular basis and is kept busy with requests to pipe at weddings, funerals, various celebrations and functions of all description. In addition he is frequently invited to judge individual piping competitions as well as band contests.
