Choir tour 2007 – by John Frost (Grade 12)

The choir tour to the garden route was extremely successful with some awesome concerts and all the boys enjoying themselves adding to the good reputation the choir has steadily been building over the past few years.

We left Hilton by bus on Sunday morning the 17th of July and travelled to Durban International where we flew to P.E. In P.E. we were met by a luxury bus, which we were all delighted to learn would be our tour bus. We spent that night with hosts from Grey High School.

On Monday we left for Plettenberg Bay where we did our first concert. We performed a short demo to Plettenberg Bay Primary School and then treated to an excellent lunch at the Upper Deck. We were meant to go whale watching that afternoon but because of a small cold front and rough seas it was cancelled; but after a few quick phone calls Mnr. Dippenaar managed to organise a visit to the Knysna Elephant Park where we were able to see and feed rehabilitated elephants close up and for the brave even touch them. We were all amazed by their calmness around us and willingness to eat fruit out of our hands. That evening we arrived at Lightey’s House Boats and split into groups of 4 or 6 and spent the night out on the lagoon. The still quiet starry night was so peaceful and was just what we needed in our busy itinerary.
On Tuesday morning we departed for George where we performed a demo for George-Suid Primęr and then had a little free time at the garden Route Mall. We had lunch at the King Fisher Restaurant in Mossel Bay and spent the afternoon preparing for the concert. That evening we shared a concert with the South Cape Childrens Choir at the Maritime Museum.

On Wednesday morning we returned to George where we were treated to an exclusive tour of Fancourt and allowed to hit a few balls on the practice range. After an excellent lunch at Meadhouse we checked in at the George Tourist Resort. We spent that afternoon playing touch rugby and soccer on the beach; the exercise was thoroughly enjoyed by all. That evening we had a concert with the George Male Choir who sing many of the same songs as we do so it was a good opportunity to add some adult voices to our choir especially in the basses.

On Thursday we ate breakfast at a well known restaurant called Upstairs at Harry’s. After a lovely breakfast we flew from George Airport to O.R. Thambo International in Johannesburg where we dropped some boys off before flying back to Durban and eventually arriving at school at about 6:30.
