Please adhere to these times to avoid disturbing the House at work or asleep.

The best time to contact the Housemaster is during normal office hours (i.e. 08H00 - 17H00, with the after-class period from 14H00 -17H00 as the best option) or, failing this, from 19H30 - 20H30. All Housemaster's phones have an answering machine/fax facility on which you may leave a message/send a fax.

HOUSE MANAGER
The House Manager is, in effect, a personal assistant to the Housemaster. It is a broad-based role with the House Manager being responsible for much of the day-to-day management of the House and boys, secretarial work and some pastoral care.

The House Manager is available Monday to Friday 08H00 - 16H00 and Saturday 07H30 - 09H00. She may be contacted by phone, cell or email and can easily answer queries and sort out various issues. She will arrange for the Housemaster to contact you for things which need to be referred to him.

SETTLING IN PERIOD - FIRST TWO WEEKS
You may not phone or visit your son during the first two weeks at the school. This is quite hard, but we have learnt through experience that it makes it easier for your son to settle in.

Any essential messages may be phoned/faxed/emailed through to the Housemaster or House Manager.

LAUNDRY
Each boy has two laundry days per week. He will select the items for washing, place them in his laundry bag and fill in duplicate laundry slips. Both slips go into the bag. When the laundry bag is returned, your son is responsible for checking the returned laundry items against the returned slip.

CARE OF PERSONAL BELONGINGS

PADLOCKS
Hilton College is not immune to theft and boys are required to bring five padlocks with them. The padlocks are used as follows:

Trunk
Wall locker
Bottom locker
Shoe locker
Tuck box

We suggest good quality combination locks. All padlocks (other than combination locks) must have spare keys. On arrival these keys are to be handed to the Housemaster/Matron in a marked envelope with your son's name.

ALL ITEMS, including shoes, sports equipment etc must be marked with name tapes. Please do not mark with laundry markers. The Matrons keep spare name tapes for this purpose. Please ensure that new items purchased at home and brought back to school are clearly marked.

EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT
Form 1 boys are not permitted to have or use a cellphone during their first term here. Cellphones may be used in Houses ONLY in accordance with House telephone regulations. Your son should refer to the rules in the Beacons booklet.

Boys may have a radio, walkman etc, but they must be locked away in the bedside locker and they should be insured. The school insurance does not cover theft of personal items. These items are the responsibility of your son and should be looked after carefully and should be covered by personal insurance.

LOST PROPERTY
Lost Property is handed in at the Front Office every day. Marked items are returned to the House. Unmarked items remain in the Front Office until the end of the year.

TUCK
Boys should bring a lockable tuck box which is kept in the House Tuck Room. A spare key should be placed in an envelope with your son's name clearly marked and handed to the Housemaster on arrival.

The tuck box may contain tea, coffee, hot chocolate, sugar, biscuits etc.
Your son also needs his own coffee mug and a teaspoon.

POCKET MONEY
Boys bring pocket money which is lodged with the Housemaster for safekeeping. They may draw on a daily basis. An amount of R150.00 per term is suggested. This amount can be spent at the tuck shop and on special outings. The money should be placed in a marked envelope with your son's name and handed to the Housemaster.

Boys are levied R60.00 per annum, R40 for House Funds and R20 for Charity and Chapel donations. The House funds are used for entertainment, and other incidentals which make life more comfortable.

GENERAL QUERIES
If you have any queries relating to the day-to-day care of the boys, please contact your son’s House Manager for assistance. Any questions that she is unable to answer will be passed onto the Housemaster.
