"MATRIC"  SYLLABUS

Studied as a two-year course.  The final examination makes it possible for pupils to "leave out" one third of this material should they chose to do so.  Very careful guidance is given in this regard. At present the syllabus is as follows: 

GENERAL HISTORY (Paper 1):

Theme 1 :       Rise of the Superpowers : The USSR and the USA  [both 1917 to 1945] 

Theme 2 :       Totalitarian States

Theme 3 :       International Affairs since 1945

SOUTH AFRICAN HISTORY (Paper 2) 

Theme 1 :       SA 1924 TO 1933 : The fall of Smuts; The Pact government of Hertzog; early years of segregation; the Depression.

Theme 2 :       SA 1934 - 1948 : The United Party Government; World War 2; Split in the UP; victory of Malan.

Theme 3 :       SA 1948 - 1976 : The Apartheid State; Afrikaner nationalism; Black resistance and the ANC, PAC, SACP, and other organizations
[ also a survey of events 1976 to 1994 - not examinable]

ASSESSMENT:

  1. Continuous Assessment will form an integral part of the assessment policy and will account for 25% of the final (matric) marks.
  2. Formal examination: Consisting at present of two  x 2 hour papers.  These both include source-based comprehension-style questions as well as essays. Candidates are given choices that allow them in the examination to set aside of up to one third of the work covered by the prescribed syllabus.
