"A rock pile ceases to be a rock
pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the
image of a cathedral!" Antoine De Saint-Exupery
Dear Parents
The summer season sports programme concluded this weekend with varied
fixtures against Michaelhouse.
I was reminded this weekend of the wonderful friendship we have with
Michaelhouse and that both schools compete the good old-fashioned way -
contesting hard yet upholding the values of good sportsmanship and
etiquette. I witnessed this on two occasions - a Hilton U15A cricketer
was dismissed for 30 odd but had battled for quite a while, anchoring
the innings. Three Michaelhouse boys ran up and shook his hand as he
trundled off. What a fine display of sportsmanship! In the U14A game a
Hilton batsman walked after a faint knick to the keeper - he did not
look at the umpire for a decision. The Michaelhouse boys, at first a
little unsure, then applauded the batsman off the field. I only wish our
international sportsmen could behave the same way!
Our golfers have done particularly well of late, winning the local
league, being crowned KZN champions and then, this weekend, successfully
defending the Douglas Cup against Michaelhouse. They continue to inspire
and lead the way in KwaZulu-Natal. Well done boys, we are proud of your
achievements.
The winter sports programme starts this week. I will be travelling to
Port Elizabeth to watch the 1st XI hockey team play in the Grey High
School festival, and I will be in Johannesburg over the Easter weekend
to watch the 1st XV play in the St Stithian's rugby festival and the
U14A team play in the Parktown rugby festival. Please watch the web page
for details of fixtures over the next few weeks.
Our Olympic Choir gave a wonderful performance in the Memorial Hall on
Saturday night, ahead of their tour to Turkey and Austria when they will
be competing in the World Choir Games.
Kind regards
