WHAT IS GOING ON?

At the AGM on 16 June, the Board will ask members to approve the alienation of not more than 100 ha of the Estate, for the purpose of establishing low-density, residential accommodation. The sites for development are on the southern boundaries of the Estate – the area where the piggery used to be, and the dairy site off D494. Neither will impact negatively on the integrity of the campus, nor will they impose on its aesthetics.

The value embedded in this 100ha will be converted into substantial capital and invested with The Society’s permanent endowment with the Hilton College Endowment Foundation.

The funds generated will be used to:

Other than those funds needed for the relocation, the money will NOT be spent. It will be invested to support the annuity income to be used primarily to fund bursaries.

THE HILTON ESTATE

The total land holdings which now make up the Hilton Estate amount to 1904ha. This substantial and most valued tract of land has been assembled in a total of 6 stages, with the original school property representing only 41% of the current Estate.

Portion 2 and Rem of Ongegund (1872)

  Erf 1 of Broedershoek (1943)

Erf 1 of Hilton (Hathorn -1959)

Erf 2 of Hilton (Henderson 50% - 1996)

The other two acquisitions were the Henderson Field and the Memorial Avenue

The Board’s Strategic Plan acknowledges that the Hilton College Estate is recognized unanimously by all stakeholders as an asset which uniquely defines the Hilton experience and education. It is the single feature which separates Hilton from all other schools, world-wide; it influences all who pass through our school in its environmental splendour, in the values it imparts, and in the increasing role it plays as an extension to the curriculum.

The Board, however, remains concerned about the financial burden of maintaining the Estate, and has resolved to formulate an aggressive Integrated Development Plan with the objective of establishing the Estate as a self-funding, income-generating, strategic asset.
