The era of the thirteenth Headmaster of Hilton College has come to an end. Mike Nicholson joined the staff in January 1977, and leaves, thirty one years later, following fourteen remarkable years as Headmaster. For Hiltonians, the best thing of all perhaps is that the man who has led our school through its finest hour is one of us. As we all know, Mike Nicholson is an Old Hiltonian, whose identification with the fortunes of Hilton, together with his deep understanding of the institution, has surely driven his pursuit of excellence here. SPEECH DAY Speech Day 2007 was a great day. Filled with emotion on account of it being Mike Nicholson’s last Speech Day at the end of a most successful career, the day proved to be a real celebration of Hilton. Ant Lovell, as the recently retired Second Master, had been asked by the Chairman to speak about Mike from a colleagues perspective (click here for the text of Ant’s speech) and this provided an excellent introduction to the Headmaster’s address. Mike spoke strongly and convincingly – click here for the text of that.

STRATEGIES FOR HILTON A REPORT TO STAKEHOLDERS
In late 2002, the Board of Governors embarked on a strategic planning process aimed at sustaining the progress of Hilton College for the next two decades. The process was thorough and far-reaching, and resulted in strategies that respond to societal change, while building on the College’s tradition and the success and strength of the recent past.
The strategic plan, which was completed in 2004, is reviewed annually by the Board in a process which includes the staff and school executive. In 2007, the stakeholder survey was repeated in order to gain further insight into current perceptions of Hilton College.

CEREMONIAL HANDOVER In
the last edition of “In Black and White”, we reported on the tradition
of the outgoing Head of School handing over the badge of office to his
successor, begun 50 years ago by GB McKenzie. At the end of this school
year, a new tradition was begun when Mike Nicholson handed Newnham’s
bugle back to the Chairman of the Board, who then handed it on to the
incoming Head, Dave Lovatt. Click here for the full story. |

BURSARIES Nothing is more important to the future of Hilton as a relevant school making an important contribution to South Africa than our capacity to fund bursaries. For more on this, including the commitment of The National Committee of The Old Hiltonian Club, click here.

MUSIC DEPT “The Hilton College Music Department has taken another revolutionary step in the education of learners by exposing them to established international artists in its new concert hall. World class performances will now form part of the privileged Hilton boy’s experience to mould a rounded gentlemen that are not only familiar with the world of sport, but also the world of the fine arts. The first such an opportunity will be on 19 February 2008, when Japanese pianist Kotaro Fukuma from the Paris Conservatoire of Music will perform in the Memorial Hall as part of the series Memorable Concerts. Fukuma has won several international competitions and recorded two CD’s with NAXOS already.” |

TWO TRIBES GO TO WAR Sub title: Hilton v Michaelhouse Old Boys Polo 2007 as told by a Hilton Old Boy Words by Grant Davison Photos by Colin Fletcher "A scorching spring day with a very slight breeze, gentle enough to flutter the flags as an undulating crowd gathered and jockeyed for position on the left bank to socialise and enjoy the pursuit of flesh, equine or other”
“Back and forth, up and down the field, like an equine version of Wimbledon, the ball was lobbed.”
