ESTATE COMMUNITY
The wheels of bureaucracy turn slowly, but at last there is good news on the relocation of those Estate residents who would like to move. Ownership of the property, purchased by The Society in Howick West, is being transferred to the Municipality, and approval for the project has been granted by the Dept of Housing. This allows for the construction project to commence and for the applications for subsidy for individual houses to be made.
The project is proceeding on the basis that The Society will match the subsidy available from the DoH. This will allow for the construction of up to 200 homes, to which the recipients will receive freehold title. A prototype for the three bedroomed homes which include a bathroom, living room and kitchen was built on the Estate, so those choosing to move are aware exactly of what to expect.
Phase 1 of the project, expected to be complete by early 2009, will see 51 homes constructed on an ideal site within the residential area of Howick West.
