HILTON COLLEGE'S BRIDGE BUILDERS

Hilton College’s budding civil engineers took part in a bridge building competition recently. The boys were set the task of building a wooden bridge that spanned 75 cm using only wood and carpenter’s glue. The designs were evaluated by a team of professional civil engineers from SSI, a leading South Africa based consulting engineering and project management group. David Wright; Sarah Skorpen; Digby Johnn gave a presentation on bridge design and then set about testing the bridges. The winning bridge held a load of 41kg and survived – the judges ran out of weights! Seen here with the winning structure are Sarah Skorpen, and pupils Marlowe Brett, Diederik Putter and Cuan Thomas, who are all in Grade 8. The project forms part of the school’s Design Technology curriculum: Mike Green and Noel Robert of the Hilton staff organised the event.
